Sling light sport aircraft
from the Airplane Factory

Since the introduction
of the Light Sport Aircraft category in the U.S. there has
been an influx of aircraft designs from overseas, many of
these coming from Germany, Poland, Italy and other European
countries. But another country that has been trying to break
into the U.S. light sport market is South Africa. The South
African Airplane Factory manufacturers of the Sling are
making inroads into a number of markets with over 70
aircraft flying and another 50 kits on order or delivered.
The U.S. representative for the Sling, Matt Liknaitzy of The
Airplane Factory U.S.A. had his Sling on display for the
first time at the E.A.A.'s Sun N Fun convention in Paradise
City. The Sling is a two seat side by side seating all metal
light sport aircraft which holds the distinction of having
made a trip circumventing the globe!
The Sling features standard aircraft dual stick and rudder
controls, with a center mounted throttle and brakes. It has
electrically operated flaps and a steerable nosewheel. The
low wing sling also uses a sliding canopy which can be open
and closed in flight below 80 knots, for an open air
feeling. Both the seats and rudder pedals are adjustable to
fit pilots of all body shapes and sizes and the 44 inch
cabin should prove comfortable for most pilots.
The craft can be powered by a Rotax 912 ULS or 912 iS 100 HP
engine and is available as a ready to fly aircraft, or can
be purchased it kit form. The distributor in Torrence
California is about 350 hours into the roughly 1000 hours it
will take to build their first complete SLSA from kit.
Cruise comes in around 120 knots and stall is 45 knots. The
Sling uses a dual glass panel touch display from MGL
Avionics.
Currently the Sling is only available in a tricycle gear
configuration but it is expected by late summer it will also
be available as a taildragger, in both kit and ready to fly
configurations.
