While at the E.A.A. Sun-N-Fun convention we
had the opportunity to talk to John Moreland from the SWT
Aviation about his work on a CubCrafter Sport Cub. John has
taken a factory certified LSA, converted it to an ELSA and
installed MEAD amphibious floats and mounting hardware on
it. His goal was to show that it was possible to make a
light sport amphibious aircraft that was affordable. The
installation of the MEAD floats on the Cubcrafters SportCub
is not a factory project. The MEAD floats have not been
certified for use on the CubCrafters line of aircraft.
However since this SportCub is now an experimental
amateurbuilt aircraft the owner can do pretty well anything
he wants to it, with the necessity of meeting the ASTM
standards.
The MEAD floats are manufactured from "composite and
carbon fiber materials with kevlar weaves." An advantage of
this style of construction is that their are no rivets or
seams. The PVC foam core used in the bottom of the float
provides for additional puncture protection. Each float has
seven different compartments in it, with bulkheads in
between each compartment. The complete installation of the
floats with amphib gear, retract system and mounting
hardware is only 235 lbs.
John was also able to do modifications to the engine to
increase it's power to approximately 120 HP, which is again
something he would not have been able to do if it was still
registered as a light sport aircraft. The draw backs to the
change in registration are that the plane cannot be used for
flight training, or be used as a rental aircraft.
The cost of the MEAD amphib float set up with mounting
hardware is approximately $30,000.00, and takes about a week
to do the initial installation. After that they can be
removed or reinstalled in less than a day.
