Thierry Zibi of SAM Aircraft had his first production SAM LS at Sun N Fun. The SAM LS has just completed certification in Canada under the Advanced Ultralight regulations. The first flights of the SAM LS were carried out just prior to Sun N Fun and Thierry report that the aircraft performed better than expected.

The first production aircraft is powered by the Rotax 912 ULS 100 HP Rotax aircraft engine. Thierry indicates cruise speed came in at 120 mph, stall with flaps 40 mph and climb just over 1,000 feet per minute.

The only change that he has made to the SAM since we talked to him at Sebring three months ago was that the canopy has been redesigned so that it opens up on a hinge, which moves the canopy sideways toward the wing. He also reports the canopy can be removed very quickly so that the SAM can be flown with jus the windscreen.

He is in the process of preparing two kits for customers in Canada and expected to have several sales completed before he left Sun N Fun. He reports that first time builders will take approximately 1300 hours to build the SAM while experienced builders should complete there projects in 750 to 800 hours.

The SAM requires no special tools or knowledge to build. All of the welding is done by the factory and the major components like the wing spars also come prebuilt.
