At the E.A.A.'s Sun N Fun Convention I had the opportunity to talk to Bryan Melborn the owner of Kolb Aircraft about the Kolb FireFly. I rated the FireFly number 1 on my list of ultralight aircraft that give you the biggest bang for your buck (tied with the Quicksilver Sprint). Bryan indicated that he is planning on making some changes to the FireFly to make it more economical to build, and add even more strength to a well proven design.

Bryan is going to be changing the wings, adding some length, and giving them an undercamber. This will give better climb and slow speed handling. He is also going to re changing the current wing ribs which all all had cut and riveted together to a pressed ribs. This again will cut costs and add strength.

Since Rotax is no longer producing the Rotax 447 which was the preferred power plant for the FireFly Bryan has decided to try out the Hirth F30 single cylinder engine, as well as the Kawasaki 440. Both engines are equipped with belt reduction drives, charging systems and electric starts.

Another thing that Bryan has decided to do is to have factory built FireFly's ready fly. A lot like a motorcycle or watercraft dealer, you will be able to walk in and pick out your plane and be ready to go. The FireFly easily fits into the U.S. part 103 ultralight aircraft category even when floats are added! It has folding wings for ease of transportation and storage. This takes about 15 minutes to do.

The FireFly has true three axis controls with "sports car like handling." It cruises along between 55-60 mph, and has a very docile stall which comes in around 27 mph.
