Midwest LSA Expo September

Chris Collins manager
of the Mount Vernon airport in Mount Vernon, Illinois, was
at Sun and Fun where I had an opportunity to talk to him
about the Midwest LSA show which will run September 5-7,
2013.
This is the 5th year for the show which has grown every
year. The Midwest LSA show is fashioned after US Sport
Aviation Expo, which is held in January in Sebring, Florida.
The Mount Vernon airport is an ideal location for hosting an
aviation event such as this. It features long, wide runways
and taxiways, plus has a grass strip. The airport has its
own restaurant, which serves some excellent meals at a very
reasonable cost.
The airport also has it's own aviation
museum. A number of large hangers are emptied to use for
commercial displays. For pilots flying into the event
transportation is provided to and from the airport and local
motels. A camping area is also available for those that
require it.
The Midwest LSA show is not like the larger expositions
where you have thousands and thousands of people, and air
show going on with all kinds of noise and explosions.
Rather, it is as Chris indicates "a more intimate show,
where you are able to get more up close and personal."
At
the Midwest LSA show you are able to talk one-on-one with
the vendors and where the vendors are able to take their
aircraft directly from their display area out onto the
runway in a matter of minutes for introductory flights!
Something that is very unique to the Mount Vernon show.
This uniqueness has led to the success of the show, in fact,
last year vendors reported selling over a dozen airplanes in
the 3 days that the show ran! This fact is probably why most
of the major light sport aircraft manufacturers or their
dealers / distributors make a point of attending. Last year
I was able to do approximately 45 interviews on different
makes and models of aircraft at the show. These interviews
were not limited to light sport aircraft, there were
gyrocopter's, single place ultralight aircraft like the Kolb
Firefly, Quicksilver, and Backyard Flyer Swing Wing!
Add to this the fact that a number of aircraft accessory and
engine suppliers like Wicks Aircraft Supply, Leading Edge
Airfoils, ULM aircraft engines, Jabiru engines and many
others set up in either the aircraft display area or in the
hangared commercial display area.
