Paul Mather owner of MSquared Aircraft has
been in the ultralight / light sport aircraft business since
the beginning. Paul has carved a "niche" for himself with
his MSquared line of aircraft and the variety of services he
offers to our community. At Sun N Fun 2013 he had on display
and was flying his latest creation an MSquared experimental
light sport aircraft powered by the HKS700T, 82 HP
turbo-charged aircraft engine. Paul is in the midst of doing
the flight testing on the HKS700T so that it can meet the
ASTM standards for use in light sport aircraft. Paul and
his crew flew two MSquared HKS700T aircraft in for the show.
Both are were built and registered as experimental aircraft,
which allowed the installation of the HKS700T. Paul's
installation of the 700T uses the Grand Rapids E.I.S.
(engine information system) to monitor the RPM, EGT, CHT,
oil pressure and the manifold pressure on the Turbo.
The HKS700T system is equipped with dual fuel pumps, which
run as two completely separate systems. The engine also uses
two completely separate ignition modules. If at any time
either of the systems fails the pilot will be notified by a
flashing light, the engine will briefly loose a couple of
hundred RPM's and then the computer automatically takes over
and restores full power.
Paul has developed an installation kit for the HKS700T
for the MSquared and other brands of similar aircraft. The
kit is easy to install and comes with all of the necessary
side panels etc. to neatly hide all of the electronics etc.
According to Paul the HKS700T engine installed weight is
about 40 lbs heavier than a 582 engine installation, and
about 60 lbs. lighter than a 912 80 HP installation. Which
gives the pilot the feel of the lighter installation but the
power of the larger engine.
The fuel burn on the HKS700T is about 1.5 gallons per
hour less than the 582. The current maintenance schedule is
100 hours, for oil, filters spark plugs etc. and the TBO is
1,000 hours, but is expected to increase once more engines
are out in the field.
