While roaming around the commercial section
of the E.A.A. Sun N Fun Convention in Lakeland we came
across the Zenith Aircraft booth. Zenith had on display
their new CH 750 Cruzer, an all metal, side by side seating
experimental light sport aircraft that is available in kit
form. Roger Dubbert who has been with Zenith Aircraft for
some twenty years, as a test pilot and show demonstration
pilot took some time out from talking to customers to give
us a quick run down on the new Zenith Air 750 Cruzer.
Roger indicated that “the CH 750 Cruzer design came
about because of customer demand" "they wanted a faster more
cross country capable light sport aircraft for more
conventional airport operations.” "Customers were
looking for more speed and comfort but still wanted the slow
speed stall of the CH 750"To this end Zenith Aircraft
developed a stronger new wing, with a new airfoil. The new
wing uses a single strut and no jury struts or leading edge
slats. The tail section was also changed to the more
conventional vertical fin and rudder configuration. These
changes increased the cruise speed by nearly 20% from
100 mph in the CH 750 STOL to 118 mph in the new CH 750
Cruzer, while still maintaining a low stall speed of only 39
mph.
Control system on the 750 Cruzer are a center mounted Y
yoke, with dual rudder pedals, dual throttles and a
steerable nosewheel. The Y stick allows for easy entrance
and exit for even the tallest of pilots, as do the large
doors with cuts outs at the front, allowing pilots to swing
their legs in, rather than pull them up towards their chest.
(Zenith Air offers a dual stick option as well.) The
standard kit comes with fixed seats but optional adjustable
seats are available. A large baggage area is located
directly behind the seats, and is accessible by sliding the
seats or backrest forward.
Visibility in all directions is exceptional on the Cruzer
with glass panel doors, and a full Skylight. The CH 750
Cruzer sports a larger instrument panel allowing for
installation of a wide variety of instruments for cross
country flight. The cruise flying angle on the 750 Cruzer
has been lowered by 3 degrees to give better visibility over
the nose while flying and landing.
The 750 Cruzer on display at Sun N Fun was equipped the new
130-hp UL350iS aircraft engine aircraft.
Starting the new UL350iS is a breeze. Just turn the key and
let the on board computer do the rest. Roger reports
that he has had over "300 hours of trouble free operation on
the UL350iS"
A variety of power plants are available for the 750 Cruzer,
including the full line of Rotax, the Jabiru, Viking, as
well as a variety of automotive engine conversions.
The CH 750 Cruzer can be built from plans, (blueprints),
component kits, or complete kits. All parts are produced
using CNC equipment, the kits make extensive use of
"match-hole" assemblies.
