AERO aircraft exhibition we are visiting with Edward Van de Kraats. He is the International sales and Marketing representative ElectrictSports and the e-Lift electric propulsion system.

The e-lift is a battery operated electric propulsion system with a collapsible propeller. The e-Lift is designed to be used with most hang gliders. The complete electric power system, motor, 24 amp hour battery, driveshaft, and prop weighs in at only 45 lbs. This weight is supported by a unique retractable landing gear system utilizing two gear legs with small wheels.

According the Edward when equipped with the "Atos" wing a pilot can achieve a climb rate of about 500 feet per minute. After take-off the pilot "retreats" into his "cocoon" retracts the gear and begins the climb to altitude. Once at altitude or when lift is found he then shuts the engine down, the prop blades fold back, and he can begin working the thermal lift. At 500 feet per minute a pilot would normally use the power to lift at around 2500 feet, meaning he has only used about 5 minutes of his 20 minute battery life.

Once out of lift he can again applies power, and the propeller automatically expands and begins working. The motor can also be use to extend glide to reach a landing spot, or to extend cross country flight. To land the pilot drops the landing gear, shuts of the motor, pops out of his "cocoon" and sets up for a landing.

The e-lift is DULV certified and officially recognized by the German DHV as an assistance for hang-glider take-off and flight. Price for the e-Lift unit is approximatley 9000 Euro.
