At AERO we had the opportunity to talk with Fabio Russo, who is the head of Research and Development for Tecnam and the designer and developer of the SNAP a single seat, low wing, aerobatic aircraft. Tecnam announced at AERO that they are going to begin manufacturing of the SNAP at their facilities in Naples and Capua, Italy.

Tecnam has over 3500 aircraft in operation all over the world today. They have over 100 service centers and 60+ dealers across the globe.

We asked Fabio about the engine in the SNAP. He told us that design started with the Rotax but then was modified  to include the EPA Power SA-R915i system. The modified engine has electronic fuel injection and an inverted oil system. The oil intake is in the middle of the oil tank to make sure there is always oil regardless of what direction the Snap is flying in. Loops, snap rolls, Cuban eights, hammerheads are all possible in the Snap when equipped with the modified engine.

The weight of the plane is about 280 kilos. The range of the SNAP is close to 600 miles, and burns approximately 5 gallons per hour. The SNAP has a 300ยบ/sec roll rate and a great power to weight ratio. The SNAP is competitive in the Primary, Sportsman and Intermediate categories of the five IAC competition categories available. The SNAP is being priced at around $150,000 for a finished assembly. The SNAP is being distributed in the U.S. by SportAir USA.
