AERO, AERO-EXPO,  AERO-EXPO 2013 Friedrichshafen Germany, Sport Aviation Magazine.

Sport Aviation Magazine - Welcome to the Sport Aviation Magazine our goal is to cover as many aircraft expositions that host aircraft described as ultralight aircraft, light sport aircraft, experimental light sport aircraft, amateur built aircraft, ELSA or homebuilt aircraft that fit into the definition of ultralight aircraft in Canada or light sport aircraft, or experimental amateurbuilt light sport aircraft in the United States.

These include three axis control aircraft, weight shift control aircraft, more commonly known as trikes, powered parachutes, helicopters, gyrocopters and powered para-gliders that meet the light sport or ultralight aircraft definition.

Airshows and aircraft expositions that we plan on covering include, the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo, E.A.A.'s Sun N Fun, E.A.A.'s Airventure, the Midwest LSA Show, and Aero Friedrichshafen in Germany. We are also hoping to attend regional shows like the Arlington Fly-In, and Rocky Mountain Fly-In.

AERO-EXPO 2013 Friedrichshafen Germany

You might better understand the work it takes to make a video such as the ones here we shot at AERO-EXPO 2013 Friedrichshafen Germany, by relating to major motion picture films from Hollywood or other movie making centers. You've probably seen "Making of ..." videos where the concepts, equipment, and tasks are explained in detail. Of course, Hollywood spends millions of dollars and often hundreds of man-hours for scenes that sometimes last just a few seconds. Naturally, our efforts aren't the same as a big-budget Hollywood production. Nonetheless each video is no small effort and I'd like to give you just a glimpse.

First you have to travel to where the action is, be it Sun 'n Fun in central Florida or a week later at the AERO-EXPO 2013 Friedrichshafen Germany. Then you carry equipment and supplies for literally miles (or kilometers) at these big events to get to where airplane projects are being shown.

Then we have to find someone that can take the time to talk to us, remember these people are a the show to talk to customers, to sell their products or services and they have a limited time during a three or four day show to do it. In some cases we have to wait 15 to 20 minutes until someone becomes available, in other cases we have may have to come back later, because the person we need to interview isn't available!

Remember we are at a aviation event, with no control over noise or lighting conditions, and have graciously been given 5 or 10 minutes to do an video interview with in most cases someone who has never done an live interview before!

Before shooting starts, we talk with representatives about their products and run through some of the things we will be covering so the people being interviewed have an idea what to expect. These are not staged or scripted events and we work hard to avoid retakes. All interviews are essentially live action and we are grateful for those whose native language is not English as they participated.

Honestly, though, all the above is the easy part. Once the video is captured much more is required. "Static" shots — those scenes you see while the interview continues on an audio track — are often shot early in the morning before crowds gather around new aircraft. Other video is secured and has to be formatted and logged. After logging all the footage editing starts.

Each  7 to 10 minute video segments takes about a day of work to compile, edit, render, upload, and label. By now you have to realize that we are NOT doing this for the money, because 9 times out of 10 we foot the bill for everything ourselves!

11 FK Lightplanes Excalibur P51 replica fighter aircraft
FK Light Planes had their brand new FK51 Excalibur on display. The FK51 Excalibur is an all composite replica of the 51 Mustang. While the FK51 Excalibur looks to be using metal construction, it is in fact all composite. The molds for the composite are very precise and show every little detail of the original it is modeled after. You can even see all the rivets, screws, metal sheet joints and surface details of the original. Just the rivets alone equal over 100,000 spots of detail on the plane.

16 TECNAM Snap, TECNAM Astore light sport aircraft
I just wrote about Van's Aircraft, a 41-year-old company that just came out with their first ready-to-fly airplane. Now I want to talk about a 65-year-old company and a 65-year old airplane design, Astore. First came a 1948 Astore. Recently the 2013 Astore — just unveiled to the public last month at the Aero show — took to the air on its first flight. The Italian company showed again that they can take one of Professor Luigi's new designs and achieve it in a remarkably short time.

The advantage of this is that the engine can be powered up daily under extreme load conditions, without weather interfering with testing. Dejager indicates that he will be running the engine for between 1500 and 2000 hours in this configuration.
