While at the AERO Airshow we had the pleasure to talk to Arnim Wegener and Jennifer Hasslinger. Arnim introduced us to the FlyEco Turbo charged Smart Diesel engine for ultralight and light sport aircraft. This engine gets its heritage from the Mercedes Smart Car, which Arnim has been working on for over seven years.

Arnim said that is very similar to the Smart Car engine, with modification to compensate for the vibration and loads associated with aircraft application. Arnim felt that ultralight and light sport aircraft needed an more fuel efficient engine, without sacrificing horsepower. The Smart diesel is an 80HP engine.

In testing Arnim used two identical aircraft one powered by the FlyEco Turbo charged engine the other the 912 ULS 100 HP Rotax engine. The FlyEco Turbo averaged on 2 gallons of fuel per hour, considerably less the the 912. The FlyEco Turbo installed weight is also 10 lbs lighter than the Rotax.

A TBO of 1800 hours was completed in the testing phase. Arnim said that "when we took test engine apart we saw there was little to no wear". So they are confident that in 1-2 years the TBO which is currently 1500 hours will be increased to 2000 hours.
