The Rotax 912 has dominated
the light sport aircraft market since its introduction, but
little by little other engine manufacturers are slowly
establishing themselves. The D-Motor from Belgium is a
rather revolutionary design, in that it uses an idea that
goes back to the 1950's - the flat head design, and mates it
with present day materials and technology.
The result is a very lightweight, compact, liquid cooled,
fuel injected, direct drive engine that produces 95 HP and
comes in at a weight of only 125 lbs. complete. Dejager
Alain manufacturer of the D-Motor had a number of his LF 26
95 HP engines on display at Aero. Dejager also had on
display the D-Motor LF 39 his new six cylinder version which
is expected to produce 130 HP. While the LF
39 on display at Aero was just a mock up, shortly after the
show the first test runs of the engine were done. The
D-Motor LF 39 uses the same bore, stroke, pistons, ignition
etc. as the four cylinder LF 26, but has two additional
cylinders. BUT the size of the LF39 is about the same as a
Rotax 912iS, but with less weight and more horsepower.
As you read this the LF 39 D Motor will be entering it's
testing phase. In order to accumulate hours quickly testing
will initially be done in a boating configuration. The
advantage of this is that the engine can be powered up daily
under extreme load conditions, without weather interfering
with testing. Dejager indicates that he will be running the
engine for between 1500 and 2000 hours in this
configuration. For more information on the D
