Yuneec e-Spyder electric

While at AERO we stopped to
talk to Tom Peghiny, who gave us an update on the Yuneec International
electric powered e-Spyder. The e-Spyder is based on the
American made Flightstar ultralight aircraft design, which
Tom manufactured for over 25 years.
In 2009 Yuneec purchased the manufacturing rights to the
Flightstar Spyder and
began the designing the e-Spyder. The e-Spyder has a 1 meter
longer wing span, a longer fuselage, a redesigned front
enclosure and has been designed to be lighter while still
retaining the strength of the original Flightstar Spyder.
The e-Spyder is the world’s first certified electric
aircraft. In February 2013, Yuneec was awarded the DULV Type
Certification for the e-Spyder aircraft and with German Type
Certificate number 830-13 1.
The e-Spyder is based on Flightstar's Spyder airframe and
uses the Yuneec electric power system. The electric system
is probably “the world’s First
Plug in and Fly” electric power system for an ultralight or
light sport aircraft. Tom said, “Yuneec did not build the electric
motor to dominate the
field. It was built because the industry needs the
technology.” Tom also indicated that the e-Spyder airframe,
and electric components are totally
built in-house. Nothing is outsourced.
The e-Spyder’s 27kw (34HP) electric motor has a flight time
of about an hour with about 20
minutes of reserve. The electric power plant has some interesting
features. When started it goes through a self diagnostic program
with lights and tones to check all of it's systems.
It also has
a function to automatically dial back the power if it senses
overheating, or low battery power.
While it’s about ready to hit the market in Germany, it will
be a bit longer in the USA. The ASTM F37 will allow electric
engines in the USA but the process with the FAA to certify
the plane will take a bit longer. Tom said they have been
working on the standards for a few years and the end is
near. It is hoped that the e-Spyder will be available in the
USA towards the end of this year if all goes well with
certification.
